Study reports: many people don’t get enough vitamin D

Vitamins and Supplements

50–80% of people across Germany have a vitamin D deficiency.

Vitamin D performs a number of important functions in the body. Amongst other things, it contributes to the maintenance of normal bones and teeth. It is also important for the normal functioning of the immune system and plays a central role in the metabolism of calcium.

A recently published study, in which the vitamin D status of 6,995 people across Germany was determined, showed the following: many people have a poor vitamin D status. These findings confirm earlier studies carried out in Germany and other European countries.

According to the analysis, done by the Robert Koch Institute in co-operation with Eppendorf University Hospital*, 50–80% of study participants had too low levels of vitamin D in the blood, depending on the season.

Vitamin D is primarily formed in the skin in the presence of sunlight or absorbed with food – giving it the nickname “the sunshine vitamin”. Vitamin D deficiency is therefore particularly high during dark seasons or in latitudes that have lower solar radiation. Vitamin D is found in only a few foods, in particular fatty fish and egg yolk. It can also be found in smaller quantities in butter and milk.

Because so many people suffer from a vitamin D deficiency, nutritional supplements can be helpful. These NUTRILITE™ products are recommended for supporting the dietary intake of vitamin D: NUTRILITE Cal Mag D Plus, NUTRILITE DOUBLE X™ and NUTRILITE Daily.
