Inspire your kids to eat (more) fish

Omega-3 is a great addition to any kid’s diet. Here, we explain why and how you should encourage your little ones to eat more fish.

When you feed your kid, you want what’s best for their growth and development. You carefully plan what their next meal will be and check that you’ve included the right amount of fruits and vegetables. But what about fish? Have you ever considered how the omega-3 found in fish plays a great role in maintaining a well-balanced diet in children?

Health benefits of fish

As an adult, you probably know that eating fish is healthy for your diet. But why is it good for a kid’s diet too? Here are a few key reasons:

  1. It’s a great source of protein, which contributes to the maintenance and growth of muscle mass

  2. It contains vitamin A, which contributes to the maintenance of normal vision

  3. Fish contains vitamin D, which contributes to normal blood calcium levels

  4. Iodine contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism

  5. Fish contains iron, to make new blood cells

  6. Oily fish such as salmon, trout, mackerel and fresh tuna are great sources of omega-3 fatty acids like EPA and DHA

How to easily incorporate (more) fish into your little one’s routine

Sometimes your child’s taste buds may not have developed a taste for fish, but having a good attitude about serving fish to your kids is a good way to get them hooked!

1. Start with a neutral-flavoured fish

White fish are often the subtlest in flavour. Introduce your little one to fish like cod, tilapia, bass or halibut to start. Simply season with salt and pepper and shallow fry in a pan. Pair it with a healthy yoghurt-based tartar sauce and some sweet potato fries and they’ll be sure to give it a go.

2. Share the experience

Another fun way to get your kids to eat more fish is by getting them involved in the cooking process. See if your kid would like to help coat a fish in breadcrumbs or even try (with assistance) to flip it in the pan.

3. Make it interactive

Taco Night is always a fun night for kids. So, why not try Fish Taco Night? Coat a cod fillet in breadcrumbs and fry it in a pan with olive oil or grill it in the oven. Then, arrange some toppings in ramekins, such as shredded cabbage, avocado, chopped tomato and fresh lime wedges, and let your kids have fun filling their own taco shells.

4. Change it up completely

Burgers are always a winner with kids, so if you’re looking to add some salmon into their diet, this is a great way to go. Finely dice a skinless salmon fillet (or pulse in a food processor). Then, add a tablespoon of mayo, a teaspoon of dry mustard powder, some chopped parsley and onion and breadcrumbs to bind the mixture. Form into burger patties and refrigerate until ready to fry. Serve them on a hamburger bun with thinly sliced cucumber and tartar sauce.
