Three layers of immunity defence

Nutrition & Wellbeing

Why you should balance, rather than boost, your immune system this summer…

Summer is here so you may think you’re safe from cold weather illnesses, right? Wrong! Viruses persist in all kinds of weather. And, since fighting off a cold is no fun, it’s prime time to get proactive. As the saying goes, the best offence is a good defence.

Taking care of your immune system can benefit you in many ways. It can help prevent you from catching the same cold or flu again, or help you to recover if you do come down with an illness, so you can get back to feeling like your regular self. Let’s take a closer look at how you can go about it:

What is the immune system?

You might have heard the phrase “boost your immune system”. But it’s actually a little misleading because, in reality, you want a balanced immune system, not an overstimulated one. At the end of the day, you want to manage your immunity not fight for it.

The immune system is a complex network of cells and proteins that work together to defend the body against infection. Some signs your immune system is at work when you have the flu include a runny nose to help wash germs from your nose and a fever as your body turns up the heat to destroy the virus. Another important thing to know is that your immune system has three layers:

  1. Physical barrier – The first layer of defence includes your skin, mucous membranes, saliva, tears, intestinal walls and gut. These barriers act as physical shields to protect you from the outside environment.

  2. Quick response – The second line of defence is your innate immunity. Think of this as your quick-response team that’s always ready. It includes non-specific cells that will try to neutralise any potentially dangerous foreign invader.

  3. Smart response – The next line of defence is what we at Amway call the smart response, or how your immune system adapts to new diseases. This layer is made up of your personal superhero cells. Whenever you get a cold or flu, cells in your adaptive immunity figure out what kind of virus or bacteria it is, then design new cells to find and destroy the infectious agents. Those specific cells stay in your body so the next time you come in contact with that exact same infectious agent, your superhero cells can quickly eliminate it.

Support for our complex immune system

Now that you know how the immune system works, the next question is, what can you do to support it? Ensure that you have enough sleep and regular exercise (also outside, like going out for walk). And make sure you have a balanced and varied diet. We all know that this is sometimes easier said than done. Luckily, there is a host of food supplements, vitamins* and minerals* that can help you maintain the function of your immune system:

Foundational products - Certain products are designed specifically to ensure a good foundation. These include essential vitamins and minerals, which can be found in Nutrilite™ Daily . Additionally there is Nutrilite™ Balance Within™ , which provides two B vitamins for immunity support, and as an additional benefit two strains of lactic-acid bacteria.

Additional products – A range of other vitamins and minerals can also be of interest if you feel your immune system is in need of extra support.

  1. Nutrilite™ Vitamin C Plus : As the name implies, this product contains vitamin C, which contributes to the normal function of the immune system.

  2. Nutrilite™ Vitamin D : Vitamin D contributes to the normal function of the immune system.

  3. Amway Mineral Sticks Zinc

  4. Nutrilite™ Garlic : Garlic contains antimicrobial properties. Using this product allows you to get the benefits of garlic without the unpleasant odour side effect.
