Add sophisticated shimmer to your home this season
The festive season is upon us and the guests will be arriving in a matter of days. We want to welcome them into our homes and celebrate with them. We want to create the best impression too, especially if some guests are customers or prospects. How can we make our home exude the spirit of this time of year – but still look elegant and harmonious?
A neutral background with a few key accessories and warm seasonal accents will work wonders to impress your party guests. Choose carefully so your key pieces of festive décor have a chance to shine without overwhelming the room or dinner table.
In general, stick to just a few colours in compatible tones and create visual balance by choosing between accents that should glimmer, and items that should calm and complement.
If you want to make a statement with fabrics, the festive theme need not be obvious – a tablecloth with a huge reindeer pattern is best kept hidden – instead, bring out textiles with an understated snowflake design, in materials with a light shimmer, or pale, matte gold if other accessories are your stand-out items.
If instead you would like the focus to be on your gold-coloured cutlery set or dinnerware with a festive sheen, ensure your fabrics, such as the tablecloth and napkins, are in neutral tones, both for balance and to support those key items taking centre stage.
Similarly, either place napkin rings with a metallic shine around plain napkins or neutral napkin rings around napkins in textiles with a seasonal sparkle.
The summer is a beautiful time for flora – holly with poppies, orchid plants, daisies all make tasteful touches to your décor. Display such items in pretty bowls or vases, loosely on shelving or around the base of candles.
No need to overdo it! A bit of sparkle and natural decorations are elegant and always in style
Candlelight works in almost every dinner party setting. Either choose candles in a warm or metallic shade, or display neutral candles in lightly shimmering vessels. If candlelight will be your only source of lighting, ensure you have enough to keep your room twinkling the whole evening through!
If you prefer electric lighting, stick to warm, pearl or subtly coloured bulbs and with a steady stream of light. Avoid installing flashing fairy lights or fibre-optic lamps that continually change colour. They will not only ruin your efforts in creating elegant décor, but can be distracting and may deter your guests from wanting to stay beyond the first course. If seasonal baubles are a must in your home, then hang subtle, pearl-like shades or matte reds and gold, rather than mirror surfaces or glitter.
